Greece is a peninsular
country possessing an archipelago of more than 2000 islands. It is
located in southern Europe, bordering the Aegean Sea, the Ionian Sea
and the Mediterranean Sea. Its border countries are Albania, Turkey,
Bulgaria and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. It is the
only EU country without sharing a land frontier with another member.
Greece has a land area of 130.800 sq km and a water area of 1.140
sq km. Its terrain is mostly mountainous, with ranges extending as
peninsulas and chains of islands. The lowest point, in Greece, is
the Mediterranean Sea, elevating at 0m, and the highest point is the
Mount Olympus at 2917m. |

The country is
quite rich in natural resources providing petroleum, magnesite, lignite,
bauxite, hydropower and marble.
Greece is divided in regions and islands groups which are organized
(for administrative purposes) into prefectures called "nomoi".
Athens is part of the "nomos Attikis" (Attica), located
in the Attica basin, in the centre of the Greek territory.
It's a seaside city surrounded by many hills and mountains (Mt Parnitha
to the north, Mt Pendelis to the north-east, Mt. Hymettos to the east
and Mt Aigali to the west). |

This
location is one of the causes of the high pollution level during summertime:
because of the hills and mountains surrounding the city and the lack
of wind, pollution's cloud can't go away and stays over the Attica
basin.
The highest mountain of the area is Mount Parnassus (1.413) and the
highest point of Athens' centre is the pined-covered Lykavitos hill
(270m).
The city of Athens covers an area of 29 squares Km.
